Freie Universitat Berlin International Summer University
Freie Universitat Berlin International Summer UniversityThe Freie Universität Berlin International Summer University (FUBiS) is
one of the most successful summer programs within Germanys growing
academic summer landscape. In 2004 over 400 students from 45 different
countries (6 continents) studied at FUBiS in 35 content based and/or German
language courses.
FUBiS is an intensive summer program that seeks to bring together
students from all over the world to promote international education and
cross-cultural understanding.
The FUBiS program is designed to deepen the understanding of Germany
and its role within the broader context of Europe and the world. Emphasis
is placed on the Humanities and Social Sciences. The interdisciplinary
approach that unites all FUBiS courses as well as the connection of
different forms of learning, such as class discussions and excursions to
various sites of interest, enrich the academic curriculum of each course
and create an intense experience of German culture. At the same time,
the students are able to earn credits that will be transferable to their
home university. Now in its 8th year, FUBiS will offer over twenty-five
fully-credited courses taught in English to enable students to
participate in this unique opportunity of studying abroad in Berlin, regardless
of whether they speak German or not. At the same time, the
International Summer University also sees itself as a meeting place for students
who are interested in German culture, history, language, literature and
art. Thus, we have complemented our curriculum with German language
courses on at least five levels of proficiency (including semi-intensive
language instruction courses that can be combined with courses taught
in English) as well as with a number of courses on literature and
culture, taught exclusively in German. A six week summer session will be
added to the regular FUBiS program in 2005, offering classes with an even
more intensive schedule:
Summer Session I is taking place from June 5th until July 14th, 2005 (6
weeks)
Summer Session II is taking place from July 17th until August 12th,
2005 (4 weeks)
Our distinguished Summer University faculty, consisting of fully
qualified professors and scientists, will teach courses that focus on topics
in their respective areas of research. In order to assure maximum
interaction between students and faculty, participation is limited to 18
students per class (15 for language courses). By taking part in this
unique opportunity to study abroad, students will become part of our lively
International Summer University community, make new friends, share
views with others, and may discover new academic interests. The
international profile of FUBiS students provides the opportunity to get to know
many students from different cultural backgrounds while emerging in the
multicultural Germany of today. Last but not least, in attending FUBiS
you will benefit from the intellectual, cultural, and recreational
opportunities of Berlin as a unique European metropolis, a place of history
and dynamic change.
