First Dutch International Summer School in the History of Science
First Dutch International Summer School in the History of Science
Utrecht, 3 - 16 July 2005
Aim
The summer school will be organized around the rich collection of
historical scientific instruments from the last 500 years kept at Utrecht,
and all sessions will employ actual instruments. The emphasis will be on
hands-on experience. Examination and testing of historical instruments
will be combined with an investigation of the historical records
surrounding their employment, the functions they fulfilled within the
evolution of scientific disciplines, the rituals of which they formed part,
and their wider societal significance.
Participants will be invited to carry out actual experiments with
historical tools and to consider both tools and experimental results from a
series of methodological angles. They will be exposed to the whole
range of instruments from serially fabricated scientific machinery to paper
tools. They will be shown the complex and often problematic role of a
given instrument within the formation, dissemination or refutation of a
scientific theory. They will also be introduced to new ways of
understanding instruments as agents of scientific change, as problematic
oracles of silent nature, and as icons of cultural identity.
Furthermore, they will hear about curatorial aspects of instrument
accessing and restoration. Finally, they will be involved in discussions
surrounding the functions of science museums and collections of
historical instruments.
The summer school, which is jointly organized by historians of science
and curators of scientific instruments, is intended for graduate
students and young scholars interested in historic scientific instruments.
Although the Summer School will take place in Utrecht it will include
sessions at the Museum Boerhaave, Scheepvaartmuseum Amsterdam, Teylers

of Latvia, which is a very lively city near the Baltic Sea with 747,2
thousand inhabitants. It is an outstanding place of architectural
treasures and offers a wide selection of leisure activities for young people.
Dynamic streets, countless coffee-bars, beautiful parks and squares and
excellent concerts will offer you different opportunities for an
exciting stay.
Host of the Summer School
The Summer School is organised by Riga Technical University. It is the
oldest university in Latvia, and it has long-standing almost 150 years
old traditions dating back to 1862. At present it is one of the largest
universities in the country and gathers nearly 15,000 students at eight
faculties in various study programs. Riga Technical University is the
only institution in Latvia providing higher education in architecture
and urban planning in Latvia at graduate and post-graduate levels. About
300 students are studying at the Faculty of Architecture and Urban
Planning, which is active in carrying out scientific research activities
and developing practical design.
Topic
Riga, the city of architecture, was founded in 1201. The historic
centre of Riga is located on the right bank of the Daugava and it is
composed of three distinctive urban structures – the medieval core, the curve
of boulevards encircling the medieval core and former suburban area
having the regular gridiron street pattern. The boulevards were developed
in the second half of the 19th century after the former fortress
ramparts were levelled down to realise a complex reconstruction program of
the city. The boulevards constitute a uniform ensemble of urban planning
and architecture of the period of Eclecticism and Art Nouveau. An
extensive development of the former suburbs began at late 19th century with
the rapid growth of economy and the population. These areas present
picturesque mixture of timber buildings surviving from earlier periods and
multi-story masonry dwelling blocks from the period of the most booming
development of the city.
The early 20th century was the epoch of Art Nouveau. By the year of
1905, Eclecticism had disappeared from the architectural practice in the
city giving its place to intense flow of fresh mood of Art Nouveau. Thus
the central part of Riga comprises more than 40% of the Art Nouveau
structures concentrated in a relatively small area. The total number of
Art Nouveau buildings in Riga is larger than in any other city in the
world – Riga is the Metropolis of Art Nouveau.
Although the Art Nouveau of Riga was greatly influenced by German,
Austrian and Finnish schools, it has its own distinctive features. Many
local architects worked in Riga at that time, and most of them were
graduates of Riga Polytechnical Institute where the Faculty of Architecture
was established in 1869. Outstanding European architects as Henry Van de
Velde (his only work in Riga has not survived) and Peter Behrens as
well as some Finnish and Russian architects have designed several
buildings in Riga. Nevertheless, much more work was done by the local
architects. This mood of the city is still alive.
Âgenskalns – one of the historical parts of Riga – has been developing
through centuries as the centre of social life of Pârdaugava – the part
of Riga located on the right bank of the Daugava, known for active
trade, culture and administrative functions as well as peculiar life
environment. The essential role of Âgenskalns in the life of the city has
been kept up until today. The retained historical urban planning structure
– the old highways and the street network formed in the 19th century as
well as wooden and stone buildings typical for this period (many of
these buildings have the status of a cultural monument) make Âgenskalns as
a united part of the city a unique value. Âgenskalns represents a wide
variety of architectural styles such as historicism, Art Nouveau and
Modern Movement. Part of Âgenskalns has been registered in the list of
the protected cultural monuments as urban planning monument. The
convenient location in the city, the excellent service infrastructure,
transport accessibility and the peculiar charm of a suburb are values,
which have been attracting investments to this part of the city during
the recent years. There are projects for new buildings as well as
projects for reconstruction and modernization of buildings. Keeping the
identity and the cultural and historical values of this region alive,
envisaging also the perspective development and future-oriented approach to
historic buildings of Âgenskalns are the main tasks of the Summer
School projects. A sustainable future vision for the development of
Âgenskalns will also be created.

A Broader Europe: Enlargement Seminars for Journalists 2005
A Broader Europe: Enlargement Seminars for Journalists 2005
Since May 2004 the EU has ten new countries. How has accession impacted on policy, business and social development in the New Member States? What are the hot issues of enlargement? How is the larger European Union functioning? At the initiative of the European Commission, DG Enlargement, the European Journalism Centre is organising an extensive programme of 23 seminars focusing on the hot issues of enlargement and aiming to provide journalists with background knowledge and contacts about key developments in the New Member States and at European level. The seminars include in-depth briefings in Brussels and visits to the New Member States. Travel and accommodation costs are paid for by the organisers. Journalists fitting the profiles can present their candidature by sending a motivation letter, a reference from their editor and a CV to Bianca Lemmens
(lemmens@ejc.nl). Candidates must indicate the date and subject of the seminar they wish to attend. Enrolment in each seminar will
continue until all places are filled.
Research Tool
I would like to bring to your attention a very useful tool for research, academic work and not only. The International Humanitarian Law Research Initiative
http://ihlresearch.org/ihl/portalhome.phpis a portal comprising of news articles, reports, judicial decisions, working papers and events information on humanitarian law, updated on a daily basis. It is an initiative of the Swiss government in collaboration with Harvard University's Program on Conflict Resolution.
There are also more specific portals, dealing with current events in Iraq:
http://www.ihlresearch.org/iraq/ and the Occupied Palestinian Territories:
http://www.ihlresearch.org/opt/.
All you need to do to be able to use the portals is to register -it is completely free and is used by the initiators only to get an idea about the nature of their readers. So far it is largely used by UN and other international organizations members, academics and NGO workers.
The advantage in using this exceptional resource is that you are ensured a better chance of objectivity, as well as thorough background and juridical research all put at your disposal.
Feel free to ask me should you have any questions. I strongly encourage you to take a look and keep this valuable tool in mind!

The Summer University of the Institute of Federalism
The Summer University of the Institute of Federalism
is an annual three week course on the topic of
"Federalism, Decentralisation and Diversity".
The Summer University is organised around three major
modules. The first week addresses in a theoretical
approach the major challenges that federalism and
decentralisation face in multicultural societies. The
second week addresses various institutional aspects of
nation-state and supranational forms of federalism,
including the European Union. The third week focuses
on some of the major issues discussed in the first or
second week. While in the first two weeks the work
runs through interactive classes and workshops, in the
third week the professors guide students' work in
groups on given cases and the results are discussed in
plenum.
In 2004 over 51 participants from 35 countries
attended the Summer University, including Ph.D.
students, civil servants, constitutional advisors and
a member of parliament. The members of the Summer
University's faculty are internationally known
scholars of law, political science, sociology and
economy with expertise in the issues of post-modern
challenges to nation-state and democracy, federalism,
decentralisation and multiculturalism.
The seventeenth session, with the theme of
"Federalism, Constitutionalism and Conflict
Transformation in Multicultural Societies", will be
held from
29 August to 16 September 2005.

SUMMER UNIV IZMIR 2005
SUMMER UNIVERSITY IZMIRIt is a privilege to experience such a wearying but as
much entertaining organisation.
And it could be also your own creation in an harmony
of your time with new knowledge relating to an
organisation.
Summer Universities , as known generally, are the kind
of traditional organisations of most, nearly all, of
AEGEE locals make real in every summer.
While they are for the cultural exchange, which are
provided by the meeting of many youth from all over
Europe and more, they can also make it possible to see
many different places with their specialities.
Travelling Summer Universities, Summer Courses,
Language Courses, Summer Events are the kinds of
Summer Universities.
Duration can be changed concerning the programmes, but
in general they are between 10-15 days.
What about the topics ?..
Of course there is no limitation about that issue.
Every local is independent on conditional of having an
aim. This aim is sometimes dance, history, cuisine,
sometimes mythology.
Summer University 2005
As in every summer, this year also there is a Summer
University. Nevertheless, it is a bit different from
the other years. It will be the shortest one in Izmir
in Turkey, but the longest in fact. How could then?..
With the corporation of AEGEE-Izmir and AEGEE-Athina
it is not so far..
As being two close locals of AEGEE, it was not a hard
thinking period of cooperating this Summer University,
“MAKING ENDS MEET” , with AEGEE-Athina.
If you want to be a part of that wonderful
organisation wholly, come and join the Summer
University Team!!!

as the Sociology Department of CEU) and the
Srodkowoeuropejska Fundacja Edukacyjna (SFE). IFiS is
a leading institution for the social sciences in
Poland. The SFE is a non-profit foundation registered
in Poland, and reporting to the Ministry of National
Education and Sport in Warsaw.
Students at the Centre for Social Studies follow an MA
programme in English, on successful completion of
which, graduates receive both the Polish post-graduate
diploma and the degree of Master of Arts of Lancaster
University that is acknowledged in Europe and the USA.
The Centre invites applications from candidates who
either have a university degree comparable to a BA or
MA degree or who will receive such a degree before the
start of the programme.
The MA programme may be followed as a full-time 12
month intensive programme or in less intensive form
over 18 months allowing study to be combined with
continuing work. The requirements for completion of
the programme are identical, regardless of the form of
study chosen. Lectures etc are held jointly for both
groups of students.
At present the following MA programmes are offered:
MA in Society and Politics
MA in Economy and Society
MA in Culture and Society
MA in Media and Society
Situated in the historic Staszic Palace in the heart
of the old centre of Warsaw, the Centre for Social
Studies is within 200 metres of the University of
Warsaw. Students have access to several libraries in
the immediate area comprising together the largest
collection in the region of sociological works in
English and other major languages.
The presence nearby of the University of Warsaw's
Sociology Department and of the University's Institute
of Applied Social Sciences, located just across the
street, also contributes to the friendly academic
environment.
Academic staff are drawn from the region (the Czech
Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia) and beyond,
including Western Europe (Belgium, France, Germany,
Sweden and the UK) and the USA (the Centre regularly
hosts a Fulbright Professor). At present the student
body comprises representatives of 18 countries. Alumni
body comprises representatives of some 40 countries
from 6 continents.
Now in its 10th year of operation, the Centre has over
300 alumni. A high proportion of graduates go on to
further study: the best at institutions including, in
the US, Berkeley, Columbia, Harvard, Stanford, The New
School for Social Research and, in the UK, Cambridge,
Lancaster, the London School of Economics and Oxford
and at leading institutions in the region itself. On
completion of their studies our graduates have
embarked on careers in market research, journalism,
public administration and in a range of NGO's and
international agencies. Others from the region have
returned to their home universities to begin to
regenerate (or establish for the first time) the study
of the social sciences and humanities in their own
countries.

Integrating Sociological Theory and Research in Europe (ISTARE)
Euro Summer School
Integrating Sociological Theory and Research in Europe (ISTARE) Solidarity and Inequality: markets, states and communities
August 22 – 27, 2005
Nijmegen, The Netherlands
The Euro Summer School “Integrating Sociological Theory and Research in
Europe” is organized on behalf of the European Consortium of
Sociological Research (ECSR) and provides intensive, rigorous and systematic
graduate training to young researchers from all European (and
exceptionally also non-European) countries.
The Summer School combines two elements of teaching and learning
opportunities: a set of lectures and seminars by eminent sociological
practitioners, and a set of workshops devoted to more in-depth analysis of
specific issues and at which participants’ own work can be discussed
alongside that of established sociologists. In this way the Summer School
seeks to combine traditional teaching methods with the opportunity for
young researchers to receive direct, practical guidance.
Being organized annually within the ECSR network members institutes,
the Summer School contributes to the creation of a network of excellence
of research centers in Europe and helps researchers to get acquainted
with each other and with the research facilities in various European
countries.

of the Summer School.

This year’s topicDuring the six days of the summer school, bridges will be built between
theoretical and empirical sociology. Theoretically, the assumption that
persons act rationally has been applied to a wide variety of subjects
under various conditions. Not only (1) the state and (2) the market are
powerful conditions for coordinating human activities, also (3)
families and other communities are important coordination mechanisms. In the
Summer School examples of these three theoretical approaches will be
given.
In recent sociology, the application of the assumption of rational
actors under the coordinating conditions of states, markets and
communities, has been accompanied not only by an emphasis on methods for
analyzing large-scale data-sets, but also by specific developments in the
collection of large-scale datasets. In the summer school, data-collection
aimed at all three conditions (markets, state, and families and other
communities) will be presented.
Theoretical and empirical work in the summer school is focused at
inequality and solidarity in states, markets and families. Students who work
in the fields of education, work, social security, the family,
religion, life style and consumption are invited to attend the summer school
and present and discuss their current research.

Programme and Daily ScheduleThe basic structure of each Graduate School event consists of a six-day
programme with about 6 distinguished scholars and about 40 graduate
student/young researcher participants. The programme entails 5 ‘Lecture
days’ plus one day of parallel workshops. On each of the lecture days the
lecturer gives 2 lectures, one, a state of the survey lecture
emphasising a particular theoretical/methodological problem of ISTAR, the other,
an applied ‘science-in-action’ lecture drawing on the lecturer’s own
recent or ongoing research. Lecture days begin with a lecture from a
leading European researcher providing a comprehensive overview of their
field of expertise, followed by presentations by two graduate students on
sub-topics related to particular areas within the filed. The afternoon
programme consists of an applied lecture, where the lecturer provides a
detailed exposition of his/her recent or ongoing empirical research.
The day’s programme concludes with a Workshop paper presentation by a
young researcher or advanced graduate student. Each individual
session is designed to ensure adequate time for detailed discussion and
critique. All papers will be circulated in advance of the summer school.
Some distinguished scholars present will be: Walter Korpi (Stockholm
University, Sweden), Tanja van der Lippe (Utrecht University,
Netherlands), Wout Ultee (Radboud University, Netherlands).
Further information about the programme will follow.

Rotary Foundation: Ambassadorial Scholarships 2006/7
Rotary Foundation: Ambassadorial Scholarships 2006/7The Rotary Foundation's oldest and best-known program is
Ambassadorial Scholarships. Since 1947 more than 30,000 men and women from 100 nations have studied abroad under its auspices. Today it is the world's largest privately funded international scholarships program. More than 1,100 scholarships were awarded for study in 2002-03. Through grants totaling approximately US$26 million, recipients from some 69 countries studied in more than 64 nations.
The purpose of the Ambassadorial Scholarships program is to further international understanding and friendly relations among people of different countries. The program sponsors several types of scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad,
scholars serve as ambassadors of goodwill to the people of the host country and give presentations about their homelands to Rotary clubs and other groups. Upon returning home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that led to greater understanding of their host countries.
Generous contributions from Rotarians worldwide represent continued faith that the students who are Ambassadorial Scholars today will be tomorrow's community and world leaders.
