Dear Friends,

We invite you to participate in the “ European Citizenship in an
Enlarged EU” Seminar that will take place in Turkey (Istanbul or Ankara) in
July-2005.

European citizenship has become crucially important issue in recent
years. It aims to develop the notion of a diverse and inclusive European
citizenship and encourage active citizenship in young Europeans. This
project aims at bringing together young people, workers, experts and
youth leaders from Europe and program counties in a discussion about what
European citizenship means to them and impart the knowledge, skills and
understanding necessary for citizens to play effective roles in society
at local, national and international level. We are also going to
discuss the issues, which are also of prime importance for youth-related
matters. The seminar is planned to be a balanced mixture of both theory and
case studies selected from everyday examples. We also hope to have the
opportunity to exchange our experiences and create good networks that
could work in the future.

the relations between Turkey and European Union. It contributes the
integration process of Turkey to EU with its effective lobbying activities
both in national and in international level.

For two years, the association incorporated a project team that submits
projects both to European Youth Project or Euromed Calls and to the
other calls such as EU Sixth Framework Programme, CFCU Active Labor
Market, Women Entrepreneurship Training Programme Project etc. “A Young Wiev

Freie Universitat Berlin International Summer University

Freie Universitat Berlin International Summer University
The Freie Universität Berlin International Summer University (FUBiS) is
one of the most successful summer programs within Germanys growing
academic summer landscape. In 2004 over 400 students from 45 different
countries (6 continents) studied at FUBiS in 35 content based and/or German
language courses.

FUBiS is an intensive summer program that seeks to bring together
students from all over the world to promote international education and
cross-cultural understanding.

The FUBiS program is designed to deepen the understanding of Germany
and its role within the broader context of Europe and the world. Emphasis
is placed on the Humanities and Social Sciences. The interdisciplinary
approach that unites all FUBiS courses as well as the connection of
different forms of learning, such as class discussions and excursions to
various sites of interest, enrich the academic curriculum of each course
and create an intense experience of German culture. At the same time,
the students are able to earn credits that will be transferable to their
home university. Now in its 8th year, FUBiS will offer over twenty-five
fully-credited courses taught in English to enable students to
participate in this unique opportunity of studying abroad in Berlin, regardless
of whether they speak German or not. At the same time, the
International Summer University also sees itself as a meeting place for students
who are interested in German culture, history, language, literature and
art. Thus, we have complemented our curriculum with German language
courses on at least five levels of proficiency (including semi-intensive
language instruction courses that can be combined with courses taught
in English) as well as with a number of courses on literature and
culture, taught exclusively in German. A six week summer session will be
added to the regular FUBiS program in 2005, offering classes with an even
more intensive schedule:

Summer Session I is taking place from June 5th until July 14th, 2005 (6
weeks)

Summer Session II is taking place from July 17th until August 12th,
2005 (4 weeks)

Our distinguished Summer University faculty, consisting of fully
qualified professors and scientists, will teach courses that focus on topics
in their respective areas of research. In order to assure maximum
interaction between students and faculty, participation is limited to 18
students per class (15 for language courses). By taking part in this
unique opportunity to study abroad, students will become part of our lively
International Summer University community, make new friends, share
views with others, and may discover new academic interests. The
international profile of FUBiS students provides the opportunity to get to know
many students from different cultural backgrounds while emerging in the
multicultural Germany of today. Last but not least, in attending FUBiS
you will benefit from the intellectual, cultural, and recreational
opportunities of Berlin as a unique European metropolis, a place of history
and dynamic change.

Asia Research institute: Research/Postdoctoral Fellowships

Applications are invited for (Senior) Visiting Fellowships, (Senior)
Research Fellowships and Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Asia Research
Institute (ARI).

The positions are intended for outstanding active researchers from both the Asian region and the world, to bring to completion an important program of research in the social sciences and humanities. Interdisciplinary interests are encouraged. "Asia" as
a research field is defined loosely in terms of the region in which Singapore is
positioned. Up to three months of a 12-month fellowship can be spent
conducting fieldwork in the Asian region.

A majority of the positions will be allocated to the Institute's current areas of research focus, as listed below. However some will be reserved for outstanding projects in any area. Applicants should mention which category they are applying in or if none, write "open category".

Terms and conditions

(Senior) Visiting Fellowships have a normative tenure of one year, though shorter periods may be negotiated. A competitive remuneration and benefits package, depending on seniority, will be provided, with (except in exceptional cases) a ceiling of $10,000 a month.

(Senior) Research Fellowships are intended for areas of particular interest to the Institute, and for scholars with at least three years of post-doctoral experience and a significant research profile.
Appointments are for two years, with the possibility of extension for a
further two. The salary ranges are $42,000 to $95,000 per annum
(Research Fellow) and $84,000 to $175,000 per annum (Senior Research Fellow).

Postdoctoral Fellowships Candidates must have fulfilled all requirements
of the PhD within the last 4 years. The research may be in any field in
the humanities and social sciences, extending into legal, commercial and
environmental concerns. The salary package is $ 3,500 per month, with a
one-time relocation allowance of $2000, and support for fieldwork and
conference attendance.

Areas of research focus

1) The changing family (Prof Gavin Jones) focuses onchanging family
forms, roles and structures in Asian societies, as other institutions
take over some family functions, low fertility, delayed marriage and
longevity transform family composition, and labour market realities and
changing gender relations affect internal family dynamics.

2) Migration (A/Prof Brenda Yeoh) explores the issues arising from
increased levels of human mobility in the region, both within and across
national borders. Mobility of high-level professional and managerial
personnel, labour migration, both documented and undocumented, and human
trafficking all raise theoretical and methodological questions and major
policy issues, as does the role of migration in urban change.

3) Religion and Globalisation (Prof Bryan Turner)explores the changing
patterns of religious practice, belief and identity in recent times,
particularly in Southeast Asia, China and South Asia.
The title implies a particular interest in transnational and diasporic
interactions, the engagement with modern technologies and values, and
new global or 'glocal' forms of identity.

4) Cultural Studies in Asia (Prof Chua Beng Huat)consciously challenges
disciplinary boundaries to address new topics, issues and concerns
thrown up by the rapid globalization of contemporary cultures. ARI is
interested in new understandings of the everyday life cultural practices
of contemporary Asia, as in adaptations of older patterns in literature,
and the performing and graphic arts, in rapidly changing contemporary
conditions.

5)Southeast Asia China interactions (Prof Anthony Reid) explores both
historical and contemporary themes that are bringing East and Southeast
Asia closer together, and is interested in any mix of the political, economic, cultural or social.

6) Southeast Asian Archeology ( A/Prof John Miksic)focuses on a
problems connected with early historic sites of Southeast Asia. Major topics include: early trade; urbanization; maritime archaeology;intercommunication between sites; and ceramics as indicators of spheres of cultural and economic interaction.

The Asia Research Institute (ARI) is a university-level institute formed
in July 2001 as one of the strategic initiatives of the National University of Singapore (NUS). The mission of the Institute is to provide a world-class focus and resource for research on the Asian region, located at one of its communication hubs. ARI engages the social sciences broadly defined, and especially interdisciplinary frontiers between and beyond disciplines. Through frequent provision of short-term
research appointments it seeks to be a place of encounters between the region and the world. Within NUS it works particularly with the Faculties of Arts and Social Sciences, Business, Law and Design, to support research, conferences, lectures, and graduate study at the highest level.

Interested applicants are invited to email/facsimile/mail their
curriculum vitae (including details of referees and email), a synopsis
of the research project, at least one sample of their
published work, and ensure that 2 or 3 referees submit directly to us
a report on their academic standing and comment on their research
project by 28 February 2005. Send applications and references to the

Deadline for Submitting Paper Proposals: 20 February 2005

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the international
colloquium "Performing Policy - Enacting Diversity. European Summer
Carnivals in Comparative Perspective." The colloquium will be held at
Humboldt-University from May 13th to 15th, 2005 and is organized by Prof.
Wolfgang Kaschuba and Dr. Michi Knecht on behalf of the Department of
European Ethnology in cooperation with Asst. Prof. Levent Soysal (Department
of Radio, Television, and Cinema, Kadir Has University, Istanbul).
Funding for the conference is granted by the Thyssen-Foundation, Germany.

The conference will explore some of the most recent anthropological and
ethnographic contributions on contemporary urban summer carnivals in
different European cities in a comparative perspective. It pursues three
goals: First, by comparing various summer carnivals we aim to map out
differences in development, aesthetic production and related social
practices and analyse them in the context of their diverse socio-cultural,
urban and political formations. Second, we will discuss
the transfer of styles, organizational structures, discourses and
actors between the various summer carnivals in Europe as well as elsewhere,
and the production of larger contexts and networks connected to
transfer practices. Third, by drawing on the method of "comparison of distant
case studies" (Gingrich 2000) the colloquium aims to contribute in
heuristic and explorative ways to a more pronounced theoretical
understanding of urban spectacles of diversity and identity in the
context of new forms of political regulation, changing migratory
regimes and progressive processes of Europeanization.

A compelling characteristic of festivals and carnivals in the
metropolitan centres of Europe and elsewhere is that they seek to cultivate a
civic sense of plurality and advocate tolerance, multiculturalism, and
diversity. Employing markers of ethnicity, culture, gender, youthfulness,
hip- and coolness, these events delimit and present identities and
celebrate cultural particularisms within an imaginary of diversity. It is
no coincidence that the goals stated by organizers of the festivals and
conveyed to the public through carnival slogans and publicity material
correlate with the civic virtues the new Europe desires to foster:
Understanding, tolerance, and cooperation among peoples within and without
Europe. The colloquium will map out the contours of the newly emerging
expressive culture of contemporary urban
summer carnivals and festivals, delineate their affinities to
Europeanization and interrogate the policies and processes that lead to their
proliferation. Authors of ethnographic case studies on "multi-ethnic"
summer carnivals or carnivalesque urban events will discuss with
colleagues from the social and cultural science, political
science and history. Policy makers and artists of urban summer
carnivals from several European cities are invited as partners in dialogue and
for commentaries.

Prospective Panels:

1. From Centre to Periphery and Back. The Expansion of the
Carnivalesque
2. Spectacles of Identity. Expressive Culture in Urban Public Space
3. Affirming "Unity in Diversity". Affective Europeanness and Emergent
Forms of Participation and Regulation
4. "Comparison and Transfer" Revisited

Applications:
We particularly invite contributions on the basis of recent
ethnographic or otherwise empirical research on summer carnivals or comparable
spectacles of diversity and identity in London, Rotterdam, Brussels,
Birmingham, Berlin and other European cities that attend to one or more of
the following questions: How does the expansion of urban summer
carnivals and comparable "spectacles of diversity and identity" change our
understanding and experience of public space? What do public festivals
reveal about the relation of immigrants and minorities to the metropolis
and the degree of their participation in the economies and social and
cultural life of the city? What are the cultural properties and confines
of the public displays of identity and diversity? In what ways do
carnivals produce feelings of expectation and tension, belonging and
exclusion, difference and identification and how is this connected to
political programmes and forms of regulation? Which insights into the
relationship
between different national contexts of migration, various displays of
diversity and specific forms of participation can be revealed through
ethnographic case studies?

Papers are limited to 20 minutes; the conference language will be
English and a publication is planned. Abstracts (in English) should not
exceed the limit of 350 words and have to be handed in by 20 February 2005
per email (michi.knecht@rz.hu-berlin.de) or mail (to Michi Knecht, see
address below). The selection Committee will finalize its decision by 1
March 2005. Please include your academic affiliation in your letter.
And please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Michi Knecht (michi.knecht@rz.hu-berlin.de)
